France: Miracle in Cathedral Tower

Miracle in Cathedral Tower.
Kev, Joanna, and I went up the Tour de la Bayette (Bayette Tower) of the Cathedral in Clermont-Ferrand---a steep climb up 250 shiny stone steps in a spiral staircase. The climb is well worth it, as we get a great panoramic view out over the city, the valley, and into the mountains. In spite of it being overcast we can see Puy de Dome clearly, and down onto the flying buttresses and across to the intricately patterned spires.
On the way up the stairs there are many window slits, narrow recessed openings in the thick stone walls, which were for light and protection. We can imagine a guard standing there, looking out and aiming his arrow downwards, knowing that the foe on the ground couldn’t possibly get back at him. The openings are now blocked off on the stairs side by narrow mesh wire. Here we encounter our miracle: in some of the recesses are birds’ nests, one with eggs, another with 6-7 hatched, fluffy baby birds, all in a huddle. What a perfect place. We felt very privileged to stand and watch them. It's not often one can get this close to wild baby creatures.
